Overview

The Har Ki Dun Trek, also known as the “Valley of Gods”, is one of the most enchanting treks in the Garhwal Himalayas. Nestled in the Govind Pashu Vihar National Park, this trek is steeped in mythology — locals believe it is the route taken by the Pandavas on their final journey to heaven. With snow-capped peaks, ancient villages, and glacial rivers, Har Ki Dun is a timeless trail that beautifully blends natural beauty and local culture.

The trail winds through alpine meadows, deodar forests, and wooden bridges over the roaring Tons River, eventually leading to the breathtaking Har Ki Dun valley, surrounded by towering peaks like Swargarohini, Bandarpoonch, and Black Peak (Kalanag). The valley’s name literally means “Valley of the Gods,” and once you stand amidst its endless meadows and watch the clouds wrap around the peaks, you’ll understand why.

This trek is a photographer’s dream, a botanist’s delight, and a storyteller’s paradise — perfect for both first-time trekkers and seasoned adventurers who seek a peaceful Himalayan experience.

Itinerary

Dehradun to Sankri

Your journey begins from Dehradun, driving along the scenic Yamuna and Tons Rivers. The route passes through the hill towns of Mussoorie, Purola, Mori, and Netwar, each offering glimpses of local life and the gradual transition from city hustle to mountain calm.
Sankri, located in the Govind Wildlife Sanctuary, serves as the base camp for both Har Ki Dun and Kedarkantha treks. Upon arrival, check in to your guesthouse or campsite, enjoy a warm meal, and relax amid pine forests. The evening briefing will cover trek essentials, safety tips, and team introductions.

Sankri to Osla via Gangarh Village

After an early breakfast, begin your trek towards the remote Osla village. The route first descends slightly to cross the Tons River via a wooden bridge, then climbs gradually along terraced fields and pine forests. You’ll pass the small but picturesque Gangarh village, where you can meet locals in traditional attire and witness their simple Himalayan lifestyle.

The trail continues along the Tons River, offering majestic views of snow-capped peaks and cascading streams. By late afternoon, you’ll reach Osla village, famous for its ancient wooden temple dedicated to Lord Someshwar (believed to be Lord Shiva).

Osla’s charm lies in its untouched beauty — stone houses, blooming flowers, and smiling villagers make this campsite feel like a journey back in time.

Osla to Kalkatiyadhar

Today’s trek is a moderate climb through forests of deodar, chestnut, and walnut trees. The trail winds alongside the river and occasionally opens up into lush meadows with distant views of Swargarohini Peak. Keep an eye out for Himalayan langurs and colorful birds that inhabit these forests.

After crossing several wooden bridges and streams, you’ll arrive at Kalkatiyadhar, a scenic meadow overlooking towering cliffs and snowy summits. The name literally means “rocky slope,” referring to the terrain around the campsite.

Kalkatiyadhar offers some of the best sunset views of the Har Ki Dun valley — the golden light reflecting on Swargarohini’s snow-capped face is pure magic.

Kalkatiyadhar to Har Ki Dun Valley and Back

This is the most exciting and rewarding day of the trek. Start early with packed breakfast and begin your ascent to the Har Ki Dun Valley. The trail gradually climbs through alpine meadows, with snow patches (especially in early summer or post-winter months).

As you reach the top of the valley, a panoramic amphitheater of mountains unfolds before you — Swargarohini, Hata Peak, Jaundhar Glacier, and Black Peak dominate the skyline. The valley itself is a vast green carpet dotted with wildflowers, grazing sheep, and glacial streams.

Spend ample time here soaking in the divine beauty of the “Valley of Gods.” If weather permits, enjoy a packed lunch by the river while gazing at the snow peaks. After a relaxed exploration, trek back to Kalkatiyadhar for the night.
