Overview
The Kuari Pass Trek, often called the “Curzon Trail”, is one of the oldest and most scenic routes in the Indian Himalayas. It was first explored by Lord Curzon during the British era and has since become a legendary trek that blends culture, adventure, and history.
Located in the Nanda Devi Biosphere Reserve, the Kuari Pass trail weaves through oak and rhododendron forests, remote villages, and snow-clad ridges, eventually opening into breathtaking views of the Nanda Devi Massif (25,643 ft) — India’s second-highest peak. Other prominent peaks visible include Dronagiri, Hathi Parvat, Kamet, Chaukhamba, Trishul, and Nanda Ghunti.
Unlike steep Himalayan climbs, the Kuari Pass offers a gradual gradient, making it an ideal first high-altitude trek. From the mystical forests near Gulling to the windswept meadows of Khullara Top and the panoramic Kuari ridge, this trek delivers a true Himalayan experience — without demanding technical climbing skills.

Itinerary
Rishikesh to Joshimath
Your journey begins early in the morning from Rishikesh, driving along the sacred Alaknanda River. The route passes through Devprayag, Rudraprayag, Karnaprayag, and Pipalkoti, the four famous confluences (Prayags) where different rivers merge into the Ganga.
It’s a long but incredibly scenic drive, offering glimpses of Himalayan villages, terraced farms, and mountain temples. On arrival at Joshimath, check into your hotel, meet your trek leader, and get briefed about the upcoming trail. The cool air and view of Dronagiri Peak set the perfect tone for your adventure.

Joshimath to Dhak Village → Trek to Gulling Top
After breakfast, take a short drive to Dhak Village, the trek starting point. The trail begins with a gradual climb through terraced fields and small mountain hamlets. You’ll pass by friendly villagers, grazing cattle, and forests of oak and deodar that echo with birdsong.
After about four hours of steady ascent, you’ll reach Gulling Top, your first campsite, tucked amid dense forests with sweeping views of Dronagiri and Hathi Parvat.
As the evening mist drifts through the woods, the campsite feels magical. Enjoy tea and dinner around the campfire while your trek leader shares stories about the route and nearby peaks.

Gulling Top to Khullara Top
Today’s trail climbs gradually through thick oak and rhododendron forests. The sunlight filters through the canopy, creating a golden-green glow. In spring, the rhododendrons bloom in red and pink, while winter transforms the forest into a snow-coated wonderland.
After crossing small mountain streams and scenic clearings, the trail opens into a vast alpine meadow known as Khullara Top. The campsite here offers a 360° view of Himalayan giants — Dronagiri to the north and Chaukhamba to the east.
Spend your afternoon exploring the meadow or resting in your tent. As night falls, the stars shimmer above the snow-covered peaks, creating an unforgettable sight.

Khullara Top → Kuari Pass → Back to Khullara
This is the summit day and the most exhilarating part of the trek. Start early after breakfast, following a steep ascent through snow patches and rocky ridges. The climb to Kuari Pass offers magnificent views throughout — every turn reveals new angles of the mighty Nanda Devi and Kamet ranges.
As you approach the pass, the trail widens into a snowy saddle surrounded by towering peaks. Standing at 12,516 ft, you’re rewarded with one of the most panoramic Himalayan vistas in all of Uttarakhand — Nanda Devi, Trishul, Kamet, Chaukhamba, Neelkanth, and Hathi Parvat seem close enough to touch.
Enjoy your packed lunch at the pass and take plenty of photographs. After spending quality time at the top, descend carefully back to Khullara Top, retracing your steps through the meadows and forests.
