Overview

The Kedarkantha Trek is one of the most scenic and accessible Himalayan winter treks, loved by beginners and seasoned trekkers alike. Nestled in the Govind Pashu Vihar National Park of Uttarkashi, Uttarakhand, it is famous for its snow-clad forests, frozen lakes, and spectacular 360° Himalayan summit views.

This trek takes you deep into the Garhwal Himalayas through ancient pine and oak forests, charming villages, and alpine meadows. The highlight is the Kedarkantha Peak (12,500 ft), which offers panoramic views of mountain giants like Swargarohini, Black Peak (Kalanag), Bandarpoonch, and Ranglana.

Unlike other high-altitude treks, Kedarkantha remains accessible even in deep winter, earning its title as the “Queen of Winter Treks in India.” It’s the perfect introduction to Himalayan trekking — short, scenic, safe, and incredibly rewarding.

Itinerary

Arrival at Sankri

Your adventure begins with a long yet beautiful drive from Dehradun to Sankri, a quaint Himalayan village and the base camp for several treks including Kedarkantha and Har Ki Dun. The route follows the Yamuna River initially and later runs parallel to the Tons River, passing through the picturesque towns of Mussoorie, Purola, and Mori.

The changing landscapes — from foothill towns to pine-scented forests — set the tone for the days ahead. On arrival, check into a cozy homestay or guesthouse. Sankri offers stunning sunset views of the surrounding peaks, especially in the golden light of the evening.
Enjoy a hot dinner and a team briefing about the trek schedule, safety tips, and acclimatization. Overnight stay at Sankri.

Sankri to Juda-ka-Talab

After breakfast, the real trek begins. The trail ascends gently, meandering through dense pine and maple forests, with patches of snow appearing as you gain altitude. Keep an eye out for Himalayan birds and langurs swinging among the deodar branches.

Midway, you’ll come across small clearings perfect for rest stops. As you approach Juda-ka-Talab, the landscape opens up to reveal a serene frozen lake surrounded by thick forests. This high-altitude pond has a fascinating myth — it’s said that Lord Shiva once meditated here, and the lake formed when water dripped from his hair (Juda).

Your campsite near the lake offers mesmerizing reflections of the surrounding trees on clear days, while winter nights bring crystal skies perfect for astrophotography. Gather around a bonfire, share stories, and enjoy the tranquil beauty of the mountains.

Juda-ka-Talab to Kedarkantha Base Camp

Today’s trail continues through dense forests of oak and pine. As you climb higher, the trees thin out and the snow cover becomes thicker, especially from late December to March. The route gradually opens up into alpine meadows, providing wide views of the surrounding peaks.

By early afternoon, you’ll reach Kedarkantha Base Camp, set in a wide clearing with snowfields stretching in every direction. The summit stands majestically above, visible from the campsite and often glowing golden at sunset.

After lunch, spend time exploring the area, taking photos, or simply resting to prepare for your early morning summit push. As darkness falls, witness a breathtaking sky studded with countless stars — a true Himalayan spectacle.

Kedarkantha Base to Summit and Return to Juda Ka Talab

Wake up before dawn (around 3–4 AM) for the summit climb — the most thrilling part of the trek. Carry only essentials in your daypack, including headlamp, water, and snacks. The ascent is steep but steady, weaving through snow-covered ridges under a starlit sky.

As you approach the top, the first rays of sunlight illuminate the Himalayan panorama. The sunrise view from Kedarkantha Summit is nothing short of magical — mountains like Swargarohini, Bandarpoonch, Kalanag, and Ranglana glow in hues of pink and gold.

At the summit, a small temple dedicated to Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati stands as a spiritual symbol amidst the snow. Take time to soak in the serenity and capture memorable photos before beginning your descent.

After breakfast at the base, descend back to Juda Ka Talab, retracing your steps through pine forests. The descent offers a fresh perspective of the terrain and often playful snow encounters along the way. Rest and relax at the lake campsite after a long yet fulfilling day.
