Overview
The Chopta – Tungnath – Chandrashila Trek is one of the most spiritually uplifting and scenically rich short treks in Uttarakhand. Known as the Mini Switzerland of India, Chopta lies in the Kedarnath Wildlife Sanctuary and serves as the base for the revered Tungnath Temple — the highest Shiva temple in the world — and the panoramic Chandrashila Summit, which offers jaw-dropping 360° Himalayan views.
The trail passes through dense rhododendron and deodar forests, blooming meadows, and snow-dusted ridges, revealing peaks like Nanda Devi, Trishul, Chaukhamba, Kedar Dome, and Bandarpoonch. Its short duration, moderate ascent, and year-round accessibility make it perfect for beginners, families, and photographers alike.
Beyond its natural beauty, this trek resonates with spirituality — it’s believed that Lord Rama meditated atop Chandrashila, and that Tungnath marks the place where Lord Shiva’s arms appeared after the Kurukshetra war.

Itinerary
Delhi to Chopta
Your Himalayan escapade begins with an overnight journey from Delhi to Chopta, either via Rishikesh or Haridwar. The long drive traces the holy Ganges and ascends into the mountains through Devprayag, Srinagar, and Rudraprayag, offering spectacular river-valley views.
Arrive at Chopta, a peaceful alpine hamlet surrounded by evergreen forests and snow peaks. The crisp air, chirping birds, and scent of pine make you feel instantly refreshed. Check into your campsite or lodge, rest, and prepare for the days ahead.

Chopta Local Exploration | Acclimatization | Visit Devprayag Sangam
Wake up to a golden sunrise and a steaming cup of tea as the first rays light up Chaukhamba Massif. After breakfast, take a short walk to nearby meadows and forest trails for acclimatization.
Later, if time allows, drive to Devprayag Sangam, where the Alaknanda and Bhagirathi rivers merge to form the holy Ganga. Witnessing the confluence from above is a deeply spiritual moment. Return to Chopta by evening, enjoy bonfire stories, and get an early night’s sleep.

Chopta to Tungnath → Tungnath to Chandrashila Peak → Return to Chopta
This is the heart of your journey — a day filled with divinity, adventure, and breathtaking scenery. Start early after breakfast to trek towards Tungnath Temple. The stone-paved trail ascends gradually through pine and rhododendron forests, opening into meadows that offer spectacular views of Chaukhamba and Kedar Peak.
After about 3 hours, you’ll reach Tungnath Temple, standing proudly at 12,073 ft. Believed to be over 1,000 years old, this temple is one of the Panch Kedar, where Lord Shiva’s arms are said to have appeared. In spring, the temple path is lined with red rhododendrons, while winter cloaks it in pristine snow. Spend some time meditating or simply absorbing the peace that envelops the shrine.
From Tungnath, begin the final ascent to Chandrashila Peak — a steep but short 1.5 km climb that takes about an hour. As you approach the top, the world opens up: an endless canvas of peaks stretching across Garhwal and Kumaon. The 360° view from Chandrashila is one of the finest in all of Uttarakhand — from Nanda Devi and Trishul to Bandarpoonch, Kedar Dome, and Chaukhamba.
At the summit, you’ll find a small temple dedicated to Lord Shiva, marking the spot where Lord Rama is believed to have meditated after defeating Ravana. The sense of serenity, coupled with the grandeur of the Himalayas, is truly spiritual.
After soaking in the view and capturing photographs, begin your descent back to Tungnath and further down to Chopta, retracing your steps. The return trek offers a different perspective as the sunlight changes, casting warm hues across the meadows.

Chopta to Deoriatal Lake → Return to Delhi
After breakfast, drive for about 25 minutes to Sari Village, the starting point for the Deoriatal hike. The short trek winds through oak and rhododendron forests and opens to the mesmerizing Deoriatal Lake, famous for its mirror-like reflections of the Chaukhamba Peaks.
Spend some peaceful moments by the lake, capturing photographs of the reflections that shimmer under the morning sun. On clear days, you can see Mount Chaukhamba mirrored perfectly in the water — a sight that leaves most trekkers speechless.
After exploring, descend back to Sari Village and begin your drive towards Delhi, carrying with you divine blessings, mountain memories, and breathtaking visuals that linger long after the trek ends.
